    CryptDB: Protecting confidentiality with encrypted query processing

    Online applications are vulnerable to theft of sensitive information because adversaries can exploit software bugs to gain access to private data, and because curious or malicious administrators may capture and leak data. CryptDB is a system that provides practical and provable confidentiality in the face of these attacks for applications backed by SQL databases. It works by executing SQL queries over encrypted data using a collection of efficient SQL-aware encryption schemes. CryptDB can also chain encryption keys to user passwords, so that a data item can be decrypted only by using the password of one of the users with access to that data. As a result, a database administrator never gets access to decrypted data, and even if all servers are compromised, an adversary cannot decrypt the data of any user who is not logged in. An analysis of a trace of 126 million SQL queries from a production MySQL server shows that CryptDB can support operations over encrypted data for 99.5% of the 128,840 columns seen in the trace. Our evaluation shows that CryptDB has low overhead, reducing throughput by 14.5% for phpBB, a web forum application, and by 26% for queries from TPC-C, compared to unmodified MySQL.     In situ nutrient assays of periphyton growth in a lowland Costa Rican stream

    Nutrient limitation of primary production was experimentally assessed using an in situ bioassay technique in the Quebrada Salto, a third-order tropical stream draining the northern foothills of the Cordillera Central in Costa Rica. Bioassays employed artificial substrata enriched with nutrients that slowly diffuse through an agar-sand matrix (Pringle & Bowers, 1984). Multiple comparisons of regression coefficients, describing chlorophyll- a accrual through time for different nutrient treatments, revealed positive micronutrient effect(s). Micronutrient treatment combinations (Fe, B, Mn, Zn, Co, Mo, EDTA), supplemented with and without nitrate and phosphate, exhibited significantly greater chlorophyll- a accrual over all other treatments (P < 0.05), supporting over three times that of the control after 14-d of substratum colonization. Neither of the major nutrients (N or P) produced a significant stimulation, although the N treatment displayed ≃50% more chlorophyll- a than the control after 14-d. Similarly, Si, EDTA, and Si + N + P treatments did not exhibit chlorophyll- a response curves that were significantly different from the control. During the experiment, mean NH 4 -N and (NO 2 + NO 3 )-N concentrations in the Salto were 2.0 µM (28.6 µg · l −1 ) and 7.2 µM (100.2 µg · l −1 ), respectively. High concentrations of PO 4 -P ( = 2.0 µM; 60.9 µg · l −1 ) and TP ( = 3.0 µM; 94.0 µg · l −1 ) were also found, and consequently low molar N:P ratios = 4.7). Despite the potential for N limitation in the system, both N and P appear to be at growth saturating levels.     CryptDB : practical security for multi-user web application databases

Outside adversaries can gain unauthorized access by exploiting unknown vulnerabilities; curious or malicious database administrators can examine or alter the data in situ. Multiple Principal CryptDB protects against attacks on web application servers. By chaining encryption keys to user passwords, an attacker gaining access to decrypted data through issuing arbitrary queries to the database through CryptDB cannot access data belonging to offline users. A logging system and distributed key storage for CryptDB constrain the pool of possibly compromised data after an attack. Multiple Principal CryptDB can be used to secure the data of six web applications examined, with 2-8 lines of altered source code and 15-111 annotations added to the schema. On the phpBB web forum application, Multiple Principal CryptDB reduces throughput by only 14.5%, with 24 sensitive fields encrypted, and adds less than 26ms of latency to each individual query.by Catherine M.S.     Elemental composition and productivity of cyanobacterial mats in an arid zone estuary in north Western Australia

    Extensive cyanobacterial mats are a feature of the high intertidal zone in the Exmouth Gulf, Western Australia. This study provides a description of the position of the mats within the intertidal zone and of the mats elemental composition and productivity. We found that the mats occupied 40 cm elevational range within the intertidal zone. They have a mean organic matter content of 1,600 g m(-2). Mean concentrations of nitrogen (N) were 1.82 g kg(-1) and phosphorus (P) 205 mg kg(-1). N:P ratio was 19.7 indicating P limitation, but N:P was variable. Rates of photosynthesis and biomass production were similar to those reported for mats in hypersaline conditions at other sites. When photosynthetic production was scaled-up for the region our data suggest that cyanobacterial mats are an important contributor to the carbon budget in the Exmouth Gulf, contributing between 5 and 15% of the total carbon fixed by primary producers. Additionally mats were observed to be a source of soluble carbohydrates in tidal waters indicating that fixed carbon from high intertidal cyanobacterial mats may enter near shore food webs through this pathway

    iRED Analysis of TAR RNA Reveals Motional Coupling, Long-Range Correlations, and a Dynamical Hinge

    The HIV-1 transactivation response RNA element (TAR), which is essential to the lifecycle of the virus, has been suggested, based on NMR and hydrodynamic measurements, to undergo substantial, collective, structural dynamics that are important for its function. To deal with the significant coupling between overall diffusional rotation and internal motion expected to exist in TAR, here we utilize an isotropic reorientational eigenmode dynamics analysis of simulated molecular trajectories to obtain a detailed description of TAR dynamics and an accurately quantified pattern of dynamical correlations. The analysis demonstrates the inseparability of internal and overall motional modes, confirms the existence and reveals the nature of collective domain dynamics, and additionally reveals that the hinge for these motions is centered on residues U23, C24, and C41. Results also indicate the existence of long-range communication between the loop and the core of the RNA, and between the loop and the bulge. Additionally, the isotropic reorientational eigenmode dynamics analysis explains, from a dynamical perspective, several existing biochemical mutational studies and suggests new mutations for future structural dynamics studies

    Ocean urea fertilization for carbon credits poses high ecological risks

    The proposed plan for enrichment of the Sulu Sea, Philippines, a region of rich marine biodiversity, with thousands of tonnes of urea in order to stimulate algal blooms and sequester carbon is flawed for multiple reasons. Urea is preferentially used as a nitrogen source by some cyanobacteria and dinoflagellates, many of which are neutrally or positively buoyant. Biological pumps to the deep sea are classically leaky, and the inefficient burial of new biomass makes the estimation of a net loss of carbon from the atmosphere questionable at best. The potential for growth of toxic dinoflagellates is also high, as many grow well on urea and some even increase their toxicity when grown on urea. Many toxic dinoflagellates form cysts which can settle to the sediment and germinate in subsequent years, forming new blooms even without further fertilization. If large-scale blooms do occur, it is likely that they will contribute to hypoxia in the bottom waters upon decomposition. Lastly, urea production requires fossil fuel usage, further limiting the potential for net carbon sequestration. The environmental and economic impacts are potentially great and need to be rigorously assessed
